Fallen Heroes

As I'm sure all of you know, five service members were killed in a shooting last Thursday. Four marines were among those killed. I've been really bothered by that and the fact that it doesn't seem to bother a lot of people. Two of these men were fathers. They had children and a wife. Today those children are fatherless and their wives are widows. One of them men had graduated from high school and joined the service only three years ago. At least three of them had been on tours in Afghanistan and one had been in Iraq. They had made it back home to where they were supposed to be safe. Yet it was here in our own country that they were killed. My heart aches for their families. These men truly are heroes. May God comfort their families during this trying time.

"Fallen Heroes"

By: Jesseca Dawn

Another day, another drill,
The same routine, there was no thrill.
The sun shone bright, the sky was clear,
All was well as noon drew near.
Then suddenly, the peace was shattered,
As the shots rang out, the people scattered.
Not caring for themselves, five men did as trained,
Entering combat mode, they worked to save others,
Despite the wounds they sustained.
While they saved lives, all five lost their own,
They did what they could, but then fell to the stone.
Their eyes closed, and the sounds faded away,
As they breathed their last, and bid earth farwell.

They served our country, they gave their all.
They survived the battles fought overseas,
only to be killed in our very own streets.
They fought for the freedom of the one who killed them,
They gave their lives, these few brave men.
They didn’t want to be heroes, but that’s what they’ve become,
Their legacy lives on, through their families left behind.
May we never forget what happened, their lives they signed,.
They said they’d give their all, and that’s just what they did.
They stood their ground, they never hid.
And in the face of a trial, they gave their lives,
We owe much to them and their sacrifice.

. . .And I won't forget the ones who died
Who gave that right to me
And I gladly stand up next to you
And defend her still today
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land
God bless the U.S.A.--Lee Greenwood

  1. Wonderful post. Amazing poem. :) Your words at the top of the post made me cry. So true... There's fatherless children and young widows because of one senseless act. :'(

  2. Thank you so much for posting, Jesseca. You're right, not enough people have seemed bothered. We have become so desensitized to bad news. Unfortunately we hear it so much that it doesn't shock us anymore. I will pray for these families. Would you mind if I shared this post on Facebook? If not that's fine, I just thought I'd ask. Thanks for sharing. Your poem was beautiful. <3

    1. That is so true! I used to be used to hear of this person or that person being killed and I never thought a thing of it. But when I read about these men's families, I guess that's when it hit me.
      Sure, I don't mind. :)

    2. You are right, Emily. We have become in a way, desensitized, and that is sad. That might be something to pray about too. To care about people; loving people as if we knew them. Also, these men should have had guns. But it is against the law for military men to possese a gun at home. This was probably brought about by thinking that the military would rebel against the country, instead of defending us. Stupid law, really, because those men probably would not all be dead right now because of it. Not to sound rude at all, trust me. Blessed are the peacemakers.

    3. Yes! This is so true! Why are these men allowed to carry a gun to protect our country and our freedoms but not to protect themselves? When you think about it, it honestly makes no sense!

  3. I agree. It has bothered me too. Our pastor told us in church on Sunday, and I felt like crying. In your poem you acccidentally said 4 men, not 5. Could I use this poem on my blog, http:.//livinginfaithandfun.blogspot.com

    1. I originally said 4 men because I was mainly talking about the marines. (I hadn't heard very much about the sailor), but I went back and changed it to five! :) Sure, you're welcome to share it!
